I would love to instill the lifelong love of writing in my special education students with the Lucy Calkins Units of Study in Opinion, Information, and Narrative Writing and accompanying trade books.
I am a special education teacher in a small school district in rural Wisconsin.
I currently teach in a multi-categorical classroom. The students range in age from kindergarten through fifth grade and have a wide range of ability levels. Their identified disabilities include autism, cognitive, learning, physical impairments and almost everything in between. I absolutely love working with children with disabilities. As any teacher knows the biggest joy comes when your students are successful. I generally work with the same students for 5-6 years. It is so satisfying seeing their growth and knowing I have done the best I can to make them confident and independent learners.
My Project
The materials I am requesting are the Lucy Calkins Units of Study in Opinion, Information, and Narrative Writing (grades K-2) with the Trade Book Packs. The sequence of these units are aligned with Common Core Standards in the areas of writing. They include grade-by-grade plans for teaching writing workshops that help students meet and exceed the Common Core State Standards. These guides are for my use as a teacher as part of my professional development. Having a set of the units K-3 would enable me to have my own reference and professional development materials and be better able to teach my students the skills they need to become successful writers. I will then be able to have the materials I need to plan lessons for my students that reflect those of their general education peers. These units of study will include detailed, day-by-day instructional lesson plans which are designed according to research-based principles to teach Opinion, Information, and Narrative Writing.
These Units of Study will give me the ability to have the same professional development materials that the general education teachers in my school are using to teach writing to their students.
Without these Writing Workshop materials I am not able to do my own professional development without borrowing from others. With these I will be better able to teach my students the skills they will need to be independent writers. These units are teacher, grade-by-grade plans for teaching writing.
