I am a special education teacher in a large urban school district in a high poverty area. Our school is an IB (International Baccalaureate) World School. I am the math inclusion teacher in grades five through eight. Our school's focus is on inquiry. We want our students to ask questions and then find answers. We also follow an international baccalaureate curriculum to help prepare our students to become international minded. My students are amazing individuals. They come to school every day knowing that they don't necessarily learn like everyone else, but they put their heart and soul into everything they do. I want my students to learn that hard work is its own reward, and that a good attitude can get them almost anywhere they want to go.
My Project
This white board table and dry erase wipes will transform the work done during station teaching during our math co teaching block. Instead of having students solve problems on a sheet of paper, they can now be writing all over the table! This lends itself to more collaborative learning experiences. With the addition of this new table, students will be able to work at their own pace in their stations to get their work completed.
By using different colored dry-erase markers, the students will be able to show the different steps within mathematical computations that sometimes require more than one color.
Whenever my students use whiteboards to show their work they are instantly more engaged. For my visual learners it will equate to increased participation and enhanced collaboration. I can make a quick assessment of student work. An added bonus for my students is the realization that with a quick wipe of an eraser, all mistakes are gone. I can't even begin to think of the level of student engagement!
