My Students

My students face their multiple and varied disabilities head-on each day. Being unable to speak, students can use devices and software designed for this purpose. As we know, the ability to contact others throughout one's day is critical. Our Staff focuses a lot on students' Individualized Education Program goals throughout the day and our guiding principle is always "Independence".

Students are in the Transition Program here at Valley High School because they have significant challenges in moving from school-age to adulthood.

We push students to learn new skills over time that they didn't know they could master. It's a great opportunity. And our students never fail to surprise us every day.

My Project

We strive to give our students new and inventive ways to improve communication. With an iPad or tablet, a student would be able to get a clear view of his/her current activity choices. An an example, a student views a screen showing a photo of a person walking outside and a photo of paints and brushes. Suddenly, this student has been given the POWER to CHOOSE his/her next activity!! Picture students gravitating toward these devices as is they were capable of verbal expression.

My students struggle with the ability to communicate and any way we can find to lessen this frustration can be transformative.
