Every child deserves the opportunity to receive the best education possible. Usually, the early years of learning can become the most influential for their future. At a young age, learning the basics such as social/emotional development, mathematical practices, and literacy skills provides the opportunity to expand the child's foundational skills, setting them up to be successful throughout their schooling.
The children in my classroom come from low to no-income homes where most students are at risk of never completing their education.
I am changing this one child at a time. I am using student-driven ideas to expand their knowledge of the information they want to know. I teach them the social and emotional skills necessary to help them cope in real-life situations. My classroom environment shows them how learning does not need to be full of mundane repetitive skills to learn, but they can learn using everyday items around them.
As a teacher in Michigan, I can say that we have very cold winters. I would love to be able to give my students warm clothes, warm pajamas, and a napping mat with an attached pillow and warm blanket for them to use at home during this cold season.
Children should be able to focus on learning, interacting with their friends, and having fun when they are at school and not have to worry about being cold when they go home because they don't have the necessities needed to stay warm.
Warmth is essential for everyone and I hope to be able to provide my students with this gift of warmth during these cold days and nights.
