Help me give my students the supplies needed to create models of various types of Native American homes. Students will learn so much from this hands-on project!
I teach and live in a rural community in Morgan County. Our school consists of fifth through eighth grade. We are departmentalized; I teach fifth grade social studies and reading. I have four classes with about 30 students in each. Our school is a Title I school and contains the highest number of Hispanic students in our system. The culture and motto of our school is "One Family." We want our school to be a family atmosphere, and that is what we strive to create daily. I love our students, they deserve the best!
My Project
After completing our unit on Native American, students will be divided into groups for this project. They will work in groups to learn about various Native American tribes through research, construct models of their homes from these supplies, create a google slide show presentation, and present all parts of the projects to their peers. Through the presentations, they will compare and contrast the various tribes thus learning from each other. They learn how these natives once lived throughout the early American terrain. Once complete, we will also display their model homes in the library for the entire school to see.
Both in the classroom and at home, students don't work with their hands as often due to so much advanced technology.
This project allows them to plan, be creative, share ideas, learn from trial and error, and produce masterpieces that they can be proud of. It also allows for the students to show various strengths that may not normally be obvious in everyday academics. They love this project and learn so much, but it is extremely costly to supply all these materials to 130 students. Please help me make this a possibility for my students so they can learn to walk in someone else's moccasins.
