This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
What do atoms and elements look like? This is a common question asked by students in the Chemistry classroom. It hard to imagine what these two things look like. Imagine how much easier it would be to visualize an element if you have the element in front of you.
My students come from low income families.
Many of my students ride on the school bus for 2 hours to get to school every morning. They really want to be successful in school and in their future careers; however, it is hard for them visualize all the possibilities of science with limited resources and lack of exposure. The Chemistry program is fairly new at Kennedy which explains the high need for supplies.
My Project
I found some old spectroscopes in the closet from the 1980s. They would work great with the Spectra tubes I have requested because the students would be able to see the emission spectra and be able to visualize the spectra for the different elements and the compound carbon dioxide. These materials could also be used in physical science to explain the subject of light, optics, and the electromagnetic spectrum.
Kennedy's mission is to prepare students for future careers and for college.
As a science teacher, I would love to encourage students to pursue careers in STEM. I do not want my students to miss out on the thrills of Chemistry and Physical Science due to a lack resources. I believe that every student deserves a quality education regardless of their demographics.
