Hello! I just started teaching in a rural area of south-central Virginia. My students enjoy being near a large lake and living the "simple life". They generally come from middle to lower-middle-class family where there aren't a whole lot of opportunities. The families value education and and spending time together, but they don't get to experience a lot of cultural activities.
My hope is to bring the culture to them in rural south-central Virginia!
I have had a lot of personal opportunities to explore other environments, and I know how valuable this is to open young minds. The more chances they get to experience a variety things, the better able they are to accept differences and to become resilient.
My Project
We do not have a globe or a good map in our second grade classroom. This makes it difficult to teach social studies and science concepts.
A globe and maps will help make the world become more real to my students!
They can better visualize where places are and how they are a part of a greater community. The globe could also be used to show how the Earth rotates and revolves on its axis for a science unit. The write on / wipe off boards will allow for interactive learning opportunities related to map skills. Learning about our world will be so much meaningful with these resources!
