I teach in an awesome school system with an amazing history. We have a mixture of students that live in the suburbs and city. While my students work and try so hard, many of the students are not always provided with the resources to work to their fullest potential as over 50% are from low-income families.
I always make sure my students have what they need to succeed- whether it is the school basics like paper and pencils or their basic needs like snacks and clothing.
I strive to make sure I teach to every student through differientiation, no matter their ability level, so that every student has an opportunity to learn and grow. Our school system is amazing and supportive, but does not always have the money to provide our classrooms or students in the ways we would really like to provide for them.
My biggest goal is to make my students feel warm and welcome in in my classroom. I want my room to be one they remember in years to come as one they felt that not only they learned a lot in, but one that they felt like they made lasting, warm memories in.
My Project
My students would be so excited to have a warm, clean spot on the floor to sit on. It would be amazing to have a carpet that was in the shape of the world so my students would not only have a cozy spot to sit on, but also a spot to learn geography on! I teach many mini-lessons on the easel/carpet area and currently they sit on a cold, tiled floor. While my students are amazing and rarely complain, I often see them uncomfortably squirming while they are trying to pay attention to the lesson.
I thrive teaching my students through interactive, engaging lessons that are hands-on and out of your chair types of lessons.
My favorite part of the day is reading to my students during our "Read A Loud" and "Shared Reading" times. Our school was built in the 60's and does not have many up-to-date features. Our hard tiles that the kids sit on currently are definitely not motivating for the students to come to.
I feel like my students would learn and participate so much more if they had a large, soft carpet to sit and learn on. Furthermore, I want to try to have various types of flexible seating for the students to work and learn on throughout the day. Not only will the carpet provide them with an alternative to sitting in a boring regular chair all day, but so will the wobble stool I have listed on this project.
My students deserve the best and I strive to provide them with the best opportunities to learn. A large, soft carpet and wobble stool would be provide them with the basics of providing them with a comfortable learning environment so they can learn and work to the best of their abilities!
