Help me give my students hands-on toys and games to work on IEP goals to make learning fun! The Fox in the Box Activity set looks great for understanding positional concepts.
I see such a variety of students on my campus from preschoolers who are nonverbal and use a walker to second graders who are working on social skills to 3rd-5th graders in a self-contained classroom for children on the Autism Spectrum.
I love that my preschoolers get so excited when I bring out colorful materials that they can manipulate.
The second graders are a hoot while working on social thinking/social skills. One student has created a “test” so to speak. We practice "expected" social skills. I warn him that I’m “testing” him (e.g. “Don't get upset if you don’t get the color you want or if you lose the game, I’m testing you.”). Then as he is leaving the group, I encourage him to remember what we worked on and he says, “My test starts now.” I hope this helps him during the rest of his day.
The students who have Autism are all so different and I have a unique relationship with each of them. It is so exciting when I find an activity or toy they enjoy.
My Project
I am always looking for ways to stimulate language and communication for my students in fun interactive ways.
The materials I am requesting will help me create fun learning activities where my students won't even realize they are working on their IEP goals.
Using colorful materials and fun games will focus on learning positional concepts and/or social skills. Dot markers are great for art projects during speech sessions. My students love the Pull Tubes. I only have two of them currently. Pull Tubes help with joint attention and turn taking; they make a fun noise too.
Exposing students to new materials throughout the school year keeps them interested in the activities and encourages communication. Novel items can motivate and stimulate a student to reach or verbalize for the new toy. Having a variety of toys/activities during our speech sessions keeps students engaged.
