Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

P.S. 154X is a dynamic school that strives to foster a love of reading within each student. I wholeheartedly assign myself to this task each and every day, believing that literacy not only teaches but also enlightens. Most recently, our school has adopted the Teachers College Readers' and Writers' Workshop model for literacy. I am most delighted with the program's student-focused curriculum based on independent reading. Students are individually assessed to determine their personal reading level. They then use these reading levels to access similarly leveled library books. In using this program, I've discovered great enthusiasm from students. Moreover, it has proven successful: students gradually move from one level to the next when they read voraciously read one level using the strategies that I have taught during Readers' Workshop. The only setback in this wonderful program is the lack of appropriately leveled reading materials in the classroom library. The books attached to this proposal are intended for use during Series Book Clubs. Students will read these books independently and they will critically analyze the texts in book clubs. In this way, the books will serve not only to enhance their reading comprehension, but also to build an genuine intellectual classroom community in which different points of view are welcomed and valued. As a teacher, this is invaluable because I ultimately want my students to learn citizenship. If you believe in the importance of literacy and citizenship, I ask for your assistance in providing my bright students with the opportunity to develop an appreciation for both.
