Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from very diverse backgrounds and neighborhoods, but come together at our school, which is a setting that focuses on creating world thinkers. My students are very aware of the world's issues- they care and want to become global citizens.
Our school is Title 1, and there are a very high number of English Language Learners and students who come from challenging backgrounds.
The population at our school is predominately Mexican and low income. No matter where these students are from- what they do have in common is a desire to work together to make the world a better place.
My Project
My students are struggling to understand what's happening in the world. I would like them to read novels that tackling the tough issues, so they can discuss these issues together in a safe space. Teen suicide, depression, bullying, sexual assault, police brutality...all of these issues are touched upon in the novels and poetry books I want my students to read.
Students will read these in small discussion groups, then prepare higher-level questions to discuss the topics together.
They will also be provided with a place to voice their opinions, feelings, and connections to these issues and how it not only affects them personally, but the world they live in.
