My students need a set of tornado tubes, a cloud kit, tornado and hurricane readers, a weather kit, a weather bingo class pack, and a cloud chart and flashcard set.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach resource Earth Science to high school students with special needs in an urban area. These students have a variety of exceptional needs ranging from learning disabilities to other health impairments, such as attention-deficit disorder.
Currently the only materials available to my students for the units on weather are textbooks and worksheets. There is not adequate funding in my yearly allotment to purchase hands-on materials such as the ones I am requesting. In my experience, students are able to better comprehend concepts when they are presented in a “hands-on” fashion. Using textbooks and worksheets often present ideas in an abstract way and it's difficult for students to relate those ideas to the real world or fully understand them when only presented books and hand-outs.
In order to bring weather "alive" for my students I need a variety of hands-on weather materials. These items include a set of 9 tornado tubes and activity book, a cloud kit which contains investigations for 7 groups, a weather kit that will provide over 70 activities, a weather bingo pack, a cloud chart and flashcard set, 8 tornado readers, and 8 hurricane readers.
Your help will ensure that my students are provided with a hands-on, multi-sensory approach to learning about clouds and weather and also help foster a love of science. I also feel that this proposal will help students who plan on going to college, as having knowledge of basic scientific concepts such as meteorology is something students are expected to have by the time they graduate from high school.
