Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students in Chicago Illinois are from one of a handful of schools in the city that offer a fully up and running dual language program. Most of them are Spanish speakers and they come from different Spanish-speaking countries.
Spanish is my students' first language and they are children of recent immigrants.
They know the everyday struggles of being in a new and different country. They are extremely eager to learn English and reading is the perfect way to get them there!
My Project
As we all know, literacy is the backbone of a good and successful education. I need to exploit the fact that my students get excited about reading. Even the struggling students love to pick up a book and drift off into another world where they can forget about their troubles and their stress. Only a couple of my students are reading at level and so they could all really benefit from more high-interest books that will take them to their next phase of their reading ability. Having an expansive library will help them raise their reading scores as well their reading levels. The students will enjoy using their library for independent reading and they will also be able to check out books so that they may read at home. While they are in the classroom they will use their soft floor seat to be comfortable and enjoy classroom library. I want to cultivate a love for reading!
