I wake up each morning filled with joy, knowing I have the pleasure of teaching my amazing first graders! Fascinated with everything from leaves to portrait art, my students are inquisitive and thrilled about learning. The enthusiasm that these six- and seven-year-olds show for their learning is a daily inspiration and motivator.
My kiddos exhibit a true zest for learning: beaming about books, maneuvering through math problems, and searching for scientific answers.
Ready for any challenge I pose them, my students show the potential and necessity for a strong educational foundation.
My class is part of a neighborhood public school in a community that is growing and changing every day. With many students coming from parents and grandparents who also attended the school, I am intent on providing my students with a first-grade experience that they and their parents will fondly remember.
My Project
Our students engage in daily number talks to warm their brains up before the math lesson. Number talks provide students with an opportunity to share their thinking, respectfully agree/disagree with their peers, and defend their reasoning. It is a powerful routine!
Do you remember feeling good at math?
Feeling bad at math? Number talks help our first graders learn that everyone is a mathematician, capable of articulating the unique way their brains work.
ETA hand2mind's Daily Math Fluency kit contains prompts, demonstration models, and number strings to build students' conceptual understanding of the relationships between numbers. With 180 days of questions, equations, and situations, students will have ample opportunity to expand their thinking about math!
