This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember painting and using colored construction paper in school? Did you ever make finger print bugs? Have you ever made sun prints using sun sensitive paper and fall leaves? I want to infuse ART and a RAINBOW of colors into my speech therapy lessons. Colorful learning in SCHOOL is COOL!
I work as a speech language pathologist in an inner city elementary school in upstate New York.
My students are in preschool-sixth grade. I work with kids that have various speech and language challenges: stuttering, articulation delays, auditory processing delays, and expressive/receptive language delays. I do not focus on the poverty of my students. I believe that every student has potential and is a leader! When I am excited about learning, my students are excited too. I want my students to learn to "communicate with the world." I currently do not have paint, construction paper or colored stamp pads for my students to use. It wastes valuable time using a crayon to color white paper orange in order to make a pumpkin! My students need a rainbow of art supplies to use while at speech.
My Project
I am requesting a RAINBOW of ART supplies to use with all of my students. These supplies include: paint, colored construction paper, stamp pads, markers, sun sensitive paper, and colored totes for storing supplies. Having access to these materials will eliminate the need to ask the art teacher for a small amount of paint or 30 pieces of red construction paper. Kids love to create projects that connect to what they are learning about. Kids tell me how happy they are to take projects home to display on the refrigerator or on their bedroom walls. These projects start conversations with families about the learning that happens at school. These conversations are priceless and very important!
