Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom library is a favorite area in our class. Students not only read there, but several go there to do class work as well.
This is a large elementary school with close to 1100 students.
This is a title one school. All of my students receive free lunch. They all come from low income families. I do everything I can financially to get them the things they need to be successful. My students are hard working and do the best they can. They are kind and look out for each other. They help each other during cooperative learning and “Can I help?”, are words I hear quite often. My students are excited to come to school everyday. They come in every morning with a smile and a, “Good Morning”. I have even had disappointed faces when they had to leave early.
My Project
State testing and reading curriculum are focused on informational text. From September thru June students read informational text, it is required reading. Though this is an academic area which they will need to further their education, they also need to be exposed to literature, non-fiction. Students love to spend time in our library. We have pillows, bean bag chairs, and a “space chair”. We not only use this area for D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read), but also as a spot for flexible seating (students choose where they want to sit). Our library is not up to par as far as books go. We have a few grade level chapter books students can choose from but not enough for a class of 32.

The books will be added to our library and give students a better choice of what to read. Since our students can not afford to buy these books and most do not have library cards, their only exposure to literature is in our classroom library. With your donation these students can become well rounded readers. Thank you
