I have been teaching 5th grade for 8 years. I've always had a diverse classroom with approximately 35% of the class on free and reduced lunch. Each year I'm challenged with reaching the students who are less motivated. Many of them come in with very little desire to learn. It doesn't take long for me to turn that around. Each year the goal is to find ways to reach each child so that they can show growth!
This year the EC teacher and I have teamed up to do inclusion for 10 EC students.
Research shows that these students can make more academic gains when left in the classroom. It also shows that their social and emotional skills increase. There are also many benefits for the other students. In just the first week of school, students are already more accepting. The EC students are showing more self-esteem as they now feel 100% part of the class community.
In preparing for this exciting challenge, I know that it's crucial to help these students to build character before they enter middle school. It is my goal to help these students to become caring and helpful citizens!!
My Project
Active sitting creates a secondary focus, which results in kids learning better and becoming more productive. Flexible seating allows students to choose how best they learn. Differentiated seating allows one’s knees, hips, and back to find comfortable and ever-changing positions. From sitting on the floor, to wobble stools, to exercise balls, to standing, students have the option to choose how they want to work. Research shows that allowing students to choose the best seating to meets their needs has a huge impact on academic achievement. I'm trying to find the best teaching practices that will give my EC students the strategies and resources they need to be successful.
Flexible seating is also ideal for students with ADD or ADHD since it provides an outlet for restlessness and extra energy.
Students will enjoy flexible seating as note-taking, seatwork, and table activities are no longer sedentary activities. Students won't even realize how this helps them to better focus, resulting in an increase in student achievement.
