At Hickory Tavern Elementary, we are concerned about creating a sense of community and unity within our school. We also try to distinguish our elementary school from the middle school which shares our building. In order to accomplish this goal, we have begun to create school-wide themes to use on a rotating basis. Our previous theme was "Dive Into a Sea of Learning". Our school hallways and all classrooms were decorated in this theme for the past two years and the students have loved it. The students are unaware that the theme will change with the next school year, and they do not know what the new theme will be. We have found the school-wide theme to be very successful. Students seem to take more pride in their school and appreciate how the theme decorations have livened up a very dull, gray building. As chair of the theme committee, it is my responsibility to find appropriate hallway decorations for the theme. Our hallways are divided into the following sections: main, kindergarten through second, Montessori and fifth grade, and third through fourth grades. For the upcoming two school years, our faculty has chosen "Let's Take A Learning Safari," focusing on animals and plant life of the jungle/rainforest. Would you please consider helping us "liven up" our gray building for our students and help our students become "wild about learning"? The decorations will be used for 2 years and then placed in storage until we rotate to the jungle/safari theme again in 5 years.
