My students need a classroom kitchenette! This will allow us to learn Spanish from food demonstrations by bringing Hispanic women from our community into the classroom to share their culture.
Our school offers one language; Spanish. Our hopes are to make our limited language offering the best and most authentic experience possible. Our school serves students in grades 9-12 and provides rigorous academics and excellent teachers who do their best to teach the target language for real life application.
Mis estudiantes love hands-on activities and games for authentic learning.
They like unique learning environments that keep them on their toes. Our students are from a wide variety of economic situations, and many receive free and reduced lunches.
My Project
Our classroom is in need of a classroom kitchenette for cultural demonstrations. I love to bring in local Hispanic women from our community to teach our students (in Spanish!) how make famous and delicious Hispanic cuisine.
What do you remember about your high school language courses - the food!
These class days are not only important for our students, but they are also very beneficial for the Hispanic women, whom are parents of students within our community. It's beneficial for them to share their culture and gain confidence in our community. Since beginning these events, our school has seen an increase in participation from Hispanic community members. I believe they're more comfortable entering a school where they don't speak the language because they now have familiar faces to greet and guide them.
Our students have an obvious benefit of learning something new about an unfamiliar culture and hearing a native speaker during these lessons.
These items will complement our classroom mini fridge and together make the space more of a classroom kitchenette. The cart will be used next to the mini fridge to store the supplies for demonstrations like salt, pepper, Tajin and other ingredients. The molcajete, lime squeezer and garlic press will be used to make famous Hispanic dishes like guacamole and salsas. Lastly, the calavera skull will be used as a wall decoration to make it look like a more authentic Hispanic kitchen.
