My special students with various cognitive and physical impairments find great pleasure from the independent movement they obtain from moving in the pool. My goal is to provide aquatic opportunities for my students and their general education peers in inclusive swim classes.
My amazing students have a wide range of challenges, including physical, cognitive, and emotional impairments.
Our rural school provides services to best meet these students' unique educational needs. We are fortunate to have a therapy pool which is used as an important part of our Adaptive Physical Education curriculum. Our pool is heated to approximately 90 degrees to enhance muscle relaxation and range of motion. Special changing areas are available so students are never exposed to cooler locker rooms. Our school houses only students with special needs. Inclusion with non-disabled students occurs only occasionally.
My Project
Safety, Communication, and Independence are three of our school's expectations. Swim class is an excellent setting to work on these goals. With new flotation devices, students will be able to swim SAFELY, INDEPENDENTLY, and COMMUNICATE with their peers as they participate in structured swim lessons. Lessons incorporate movement and academic objectives. FUN INCLUDED! Our goal is that inclusive swim classes build a bridge to a future of safe swimmers and unified communities.
Donations to this project will ensure that more students can participate in our inclusive swim lessons.
Flotation devices are an important supplemental aid. The unique properties of water allow students the freedom of movement that they may not experience when not in the pool. Students are having fun while working on skills such as motor planning, core strengthening, coordination, cognition and social interactions, TOGETHER!
