My 2nd grade students come to school eager to learn and experience new things. They come from ethnically diverse backgrounds such as African-American, Filipino, Southeast Asian and Hispanic. Our school is a Title One school and all our students participate in the free or reduced price lunch program. Their parents work hard and want the best opportunities for their children. My students' experiences are limited, but they have a great curiosity.
Making music helps my students see themselves as creative, inventive, artful people who can make a difference in the world.
My Project
In our class, we sing to learn to read, to experiment with rhyme, to learn about language and to practice academic skills and concepts. I would like my students to participate more fully in our music-making and learning.
Learning to play an instrument is so much more than one might expect; engaging not only their minds, but their heart, and inspiring art and music-making throughout the rest of their lives.
Adding nine more ukeleles to my classroom will allow more students to participate at the same time. Students will make music, build their language abilities and confidence, build the foundations for math understanding and learn the process of song writing in order to enhance and deepen their learning experience in other academic areas.
