My students are a well-rounded group of second graders that attend our school nestled in a quiet, residential neighborhood within a major metropolitan California city. Approximately half of our school's student population participate in the free or reduced-price lunch program. Many students return home after school to apartments and shared, multi-generation households where often both parents work two jobs to provide for their children. Our classroom has been structured to be a safe, comfortable and accepting place for ALL students to focus on their academic and creative success.
My Project
The variety of requested sports equipment will be crucial in my students' ability to develop and strengthen their perceptual motor skills. During their team gymnastic practices, several different groupings and activities will be occurring with the use of the balance beam and cones in order to extend their balancing abilities as they walk on the beam and lean over to touch the cones. Additionally, the rope and scooters will allow for my students to build upper body strength as they rest on the scooter and pull themselves along the rope with their arms. The wiffle ball scoops, ball catching cones, and nets will strengthen their hand eye coordination. Finally, the exercise ladders will allow for them to develop and strengthen their agility. All the equipment will be neatly stored in storage containers when not in use.
