Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 30 motivated students who want to learn everything about anything. This will be their first experience in a middle school setting. Many of the students come from a low socioeconomic background, with limited resources available. Our school, built in 1965, is a Title I school in Nevada, serving 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students with 100% participation in the free breakfast and lunch program.
My sixth grade students are incredible and are eager to learn with the materials that are given to them and the materials their teacher can provide.
Students are grouped in teams to build relationships with faculty, staff, and peers. This allows them to keep the same core set of teachers who will stay with them for their entire middle school journey. Team Texas is home to a diverse group of students.
My Project
Organization is the key to success in any facet of life. My 6th grade advisory students are experiencing middle school and multiple classes for the first time. In elementary school, students had the same classroom and teacher all day long. Their materials stayed in one room. Now, my students have six classes each day in six different locations. They are not allowed to bring backpacks to class but need to keep everything in a binder. Even having a binder, their papers still seem to get lost
Zipper binders are a great tool to help students get organized and keep them from losing their school supplies and important papers.
Many of my students can't afford to purchase these types of binders and this project will allow me to help some of my more disorganized students become more successful in school. Ultimately, I would like to be able to give each student in my advisory class a zipper binder.
