My students need basic supplies that many of their families cannot afford. Some of these items include pencils and a good sharpener, and materials to support their creativity!
This is my first year teaching, and I get to spend it surrounded by 22 first graders! First grade is such an influential year for young learners! Other than kindergarten, first grade is a huge year for building the foundation for the rest of students' schooling.
Since my classroom primarily consists of students from low-income families, it is extremely important that students have access to the materials they need to have a successful year!
My classroom is going to be full of learners from many different backgrounds, and it is detrimental to their success that they can all have the opportunity to learn and grow together. I could not be more excited to build a community with every one of my students, while allowing them the opportunity to fully immerse themselves into their education. Students should be excited to come to school and learn and not have to worry about affording materials!
By providing students with the materials that they need to succeed, they do not have to worry if their families cannot afford them. Being in a Title 1 school, more than half of my students come from low-income households.
If I can provide students with basic materials, they can focus solely on their education, and more importantly- having fun!
School supplies are one thing that many of us take for granted, because our families were able to afford them without any issues. If students come to school and already have the basic supplies of pencils, crayons, etc., then we can learn together in a hands-on atmosphere where students don't have to worry "what if I don't have (blank)?"
What's the one school supply you know students need? Pencils, of course! I have asked for pencils, which we know they'll go through like crazy! With pencils, you need a good sharpener, too..and you can't forget erasers! Everyone knows that mistakes are A-OK, and can always be fixed!
I also would like for all students to have access to their own set of crayons, markers, and paper readily available for their creativity! Students should be able to embrace their artistic creativity throughout every subject, and without access to these materials, they're stuck doing things the old-fashioned way. By providing students with the basics, they can focus on being energetic, engaged first-graders!
