I teach preschool in a low income/high poverty school. Our school is made up of all types of students, and we are at 100% free and reduced lunch rate. Each day is an adventure, and I encourage my students to try their hardest, be kind and thoughtful toward one another, and support their classmates, despite the challenges they face at home.
I am a very lucky teacher because my students are experiencing school for the very first time, and I get to foster their love for learning!
I have the littlest learners (the 4 year olds) in our building, and they are eager, excited, and full of energy! They love to read, play, tell stories, and explore the things around them. I enjoy finding new ways to help my students learn and love to help them celebrate their successes, big or small, every day.
My Project
Sensory bins are awesome hands-on tools for children to learn about their world and their senses! Sensory play may calm a child, focus a child, and engage a child.
Sensory bins let a child explore, discover and create play using practical life skills (dumping, filling, scooping) and learn valuable play skills.
The shovels, tongs, funnels, and buckets will help with these practical life skills.
Great for both social play and independent play, sensory bins allow children to play cooperatively or side by side. Sensory bins increase language development from experiencing with their hands all there is to see and do which leads to great conversations and opportunities to model language. I plan on changing the sensory bin once a month, so many of the items are specific for each month. For example, I would like to use many of the items on the list for an April garden sensory bin. The black beans will be used as fillers and the caterpillars, butterflies, pinwheels, insects and flowers will be used for pretend play and imagination. The kids garden tool set will help the kids understand how to maintain and use specific tools in the garden I will also put some of the metal pots, spoons and shovels in the sensory bin for the students to dig, dump, and stir the black beans. Each month will bring a new sensory bin into the classroom with a new filler, new buckets, spoons and measuring materials, and new little things to create with. All of the items I plan on using are coming from the list of resources on my project. I am excited to see how these sensory bins will encourage great conversations and social play among my students.
