Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have grown up in an inner city; many of these children face poverty, violence and obscenities of life on a daily basis that are well beyond what most of us could not imagine. Despite all of this, they come to school ready to expand their minds and continue to explore. My students continue to be hopeful and strive for their very best.
They are always looking to learn new things and explore different subjects more in depth; they come to school hungry for knowledge trying to do their best to learn as I try to do my best to give them a good education and an introduction to the American way of life.
My school has limited resources, and the parents have even less, so anything that donors can do is so very appreciated.
These children deserve the best and I plan to keep doing my best to provide them with the skills and tools they need to be successful on their journey in life after leaving my classroom!
My Project
Chess is the ultimate brain workout. Chess builds both sides of a player's brain. Chess players utilize and develop the left hemisphere dealing with object identification simultaneously as they build the right hemisphere which deals with pattern recognition. Over time, thanks to the rules and techniques involved in the game, playing chess will effectively exercise and develop not one but both sides of the brain. Being chess players helps children to develop an almost natural feeling of when to use a certain strategy or tactic, which increases memory functions. The benefits of chess can be noticed in academic performance, responsibility, and commitment.
Chess is an excellent way to learn planning, critical thinking, math, and practice sportsmanship; The students who would benefit from this project come from economic backgrounds that prohibit extras like chess boards at home.
Just like any other sport, there is no improvement in chess without repeated practice. Having chess boards at home will give these students the ability to share chess with siblings, parents, and other loved ones. Even though the ultimate outcome of this project is to increase chess prowess, the extra time spent with others is a secondary outcome that is just as important as the improved chess skills!
