My Students

I teach Academic Intervention Services to students in grades K-5. Our rural elementary school, in upstate New York, has a student population of 340 students. Students who are at risk of failing the New York State Assessments and students who are having difficulty academically are recommended to receive Academic Intervention Services.

My students come from a diverse, economic background, with a significant amount of students who receive free or reduced-priced lunch.

They are all very eager to learn and love coming to school. Our students are independent, hardworking, and compassionate.

My Project

We have a goal to get our students interested in reading different genres of literature through a Book Tasting event in our library!

Tables will be set up with different genres of literature and at different reading/grade levels.

Students will go to tables, together with their peers, and complete a menu of tasks about a book at their table so that they may develop a curiosity of a book, and in turn, a spark of reading will occur.

The more book tasting our students do, the more they will become interested in reading. These high interest books will also match books in our school book fair, so if students are really interested in a book, they will be able to find it at the book fair to read with their family. Not only will this event help to spark a love of reading for our students, but it will also help our students share their love of reading with their families. The various books are at different reading and grade levels and address different genres. Tables will be set up with table cloths and candles and the teachers will be delivering books while wearing aprons and chef hats. This event is sure to make a difference in how our students view books and reading. It will help our students to develop of love of reading that they can share with their families.
