My Students

Have you ever watched CSI or read a mystery book? Do you know the feeling of solving a mystery? My third-graders want to solve mysteries too, by reading high interest mystery novels!

My school is full of inspiring students, passionate teachers, and an encouraging environment.

Each of my students enters my classroom with different experiences, but each morning we are ready to go and make the most of the day. 95% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and over half do not speak English as their first language. Despite all challenges that my students face on a daily basis, they are ready to learn and inspire me daily. Our days are full of hands on learning, cooperative learning, and reading, reading, reading!! They deserve the best and are striving for success and proficiency daily.

My Project

Our school has adopted the balanced literacy model for our literacy instruction. One of the third-grade units is mystery book series, but last year we were not able to do this, because we did not have enough mystery books! This year, however, they are going to be detectives right along with Nate the Great and Encyclopedia Brown. By having 6 copies of the books, my students will be able to work together and discuss their books, which is essential for all students, but especially for my English Language Learners. Throughout the mystery book series unit, my students will read these books on a daily basis and dig deep into them, to help their comprehension as good readers.

All research says that the amount of time students spend with quality literature has a direct impact on their reading abilities.

Due to a lack of books in my students' homes, it is crucial that I am able to provide my students with books to read each day. These books will enrich my students' literacy instruction. They need to be exposed to all genres of books, and mystery is a genre that they have not read much of! These books and activities will help set them up for a successful future.
