I am a fourth grade Social Studies teacher in Caldwell, Texas. We are a Title 1 school with a variety of students. I currently teach Texas History to all of the fourth grades on campus (140). In setting up my classroom next year, I want students to have a variety of options for seating AND be able to clear the room for group activities on a large scale. Nine and ten-year olds need movement.
I am a firm believer that kids learn by DOING and that includes DRAMA!
Many of the lessons each week involve students acting out important moments in Texas history like the runaway scrape and dress up like important figures ranging from Caddo chiefs, conquistadors and revolutionary heroes. In order to do this, our class needs flexible seating that can be cleared easily. I feel that the best way to do this is by using a variety of seating including bean bag chairs. The ease of movement will be conducive to lessons filled with drama and action.
My Project
I'm so excited to be adding alternative seating into my classroom next year. These bean bags will allow kids a very comfortable choice. I also use drama often in my Texas history class. We need furniture that is easily cleared to make room for a stage to act out important events in Texas history. This seating option is not only comfortable but quick to move and quick to clear when we need space in the room. Your donation will allow us to easily incorporate drama and give students a choice of seating throughout the next year. After being affected by Hurricane Harvey, it would be great for these kids to have this extra layer of comfort next year in my class.
