Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher in a low social economic level community of wonderful students who have a strong desire to learn. It is very important for second grade children to get ready for the first state test CST.
As English Language Learners, they struggle with math standards. However, my students are eager to learn and have ambitions to succeed on a high stake CST test that they will take this year for the first time. They need more practice building their arithmetic skills and confidence they need to succeed on standardized tests with activities that provide tons of focused practice! Second graders love group work! Every day we have calendar math practice lessons on the “carpet” (old flooring carpet with stains that are permanent despite the hard efforts of our custodians to shampoo them away). It is also an area for math games and a place for my students to sit while they are cooperatively working in centers together.
To allow for more time on the floor during large group activities such as calendar math activities as well as small group test prep games and activities, I am requesting an area rug for the classroom. Math skills and learning how to play games as well as learning how to cooperate with others are very important skills to teach second grade students. Comfort is also very important for the little bodies. Many times the students are dirty from getting up off the bare floor or they hurt from sitting or kneeling whether it is five minutes or thirty minutes of sitting and working on the floor. I believe having this rug will make learning math standards more comfortable and enjoyable for everyone in the classroom.
If this proposal is funded, our students will be given an opportunity to get a place for focused practice in the key academic math standards. I want them to feel comfortable and to be excited about building math fact skills as they follow along with interesting activities.
