We are a Title I school near the beach in New York. The community in which my students live is composed of low socioeconomic and working class families; however, the families who can afford to send their children to parochial school do, and the rest of the children in the neighborhood attend our public school.
Each student in my class is a unique character and when they come together, it makes for the perfect story.
My class is an ICT First Grade Class. The class is part special education and part general education, but one would never know this when they meet the children. They work together and play together on a daily basis. The general education students and special education students work alongside each other to help each other succeed.
The majority of my students come from the housing projects two blocks from our school. They are low income, and many have struggled more than most adults have in their lifetime.
My Project
Imagine being told "SIT STILL!", "STOP WIGGLING!", or "WHY ARE YOU SO FIDGETY!?" all the time when you just can not help it! In the past I have noticed that children who are allowed to stand while they work, lay on a carpet with a clip board or pillow or even just crouch in their chairs, are some of the most productive students in the classroom. That's because children should be allowed to move around as they work!
In my 1st grade ICT class, I hope to provide the children with an opportunity to choose the type of seat they want to use for different activities.
My co-teacher and I have begun providing flexible seating by purchasing a few pillows, and inflatables chairs for our class. But what if a child feels like they work best with a bouncy band seat, or just sitting up at the carpet? We want them to have those options as well. This is why we are asking for bouncy bands to place on chairs and lap desks for our carpets. These Bouncy bands will be placed on chair legs, allowing the students to bounce his or her legs and/or wiggle from their chair without distracting others. We are also asking for lap desk, which will allow students who choose to sit on the floor a small desktop to work on. Our hope is that those children "who just can not help it" will be far more productive as students.
