My students need binders with page protectors and dividers to keep their math visuals organized. They also need a pouch to keep math materials and laminated extras in their binder.
I teach in a heavily low-income school district, where most of our students come from single-parent homes or live with their grandparents. The students in my building face the daily struggle of attending school without having the supplies and the basic understanding of how to be successful learner within a classroom setting. Our students come to school wanting to learn and become successful but lack the academic and social skills necessary to bridge the gap.
The students' struggle continues even after they leave school.
They often have to watch their siblings and take care of the household because of their parent(s) working late or just absent. Homework is rarely the priority and parents do not have the skills necessary to support their learning when they are home. Our students are also facing a neighborhood that is crime-ridden. The students want to succeed but need guidance and support in all areas of their life to gain the skills necessary to get out of the cycle of poverty.
My Project
My students struggle with grade level material and basic concepts from previous years. They need colorful examples and reference sheets that teach them the tricks of math skills. Even if they are given the sheets, they lose them, get ripped, or can't find the right ones in a timely manner. They need a way to have the resources available to them whether they are in a small group setting or the general education classroom.
Your generous donation will help students who struggle with math each day the help that will make them successful in the classroom.
Students will be able to use these resource binders to help them complete independent work in any math class they are in as well as take the support home with them to complete homework. Categorized by unit for easy access, students can quickly find the visuals and supports they need that will help them remember tricks they have learned and worked examples.
