Once that bell rings, the girls come sprinting to the gym already getting a hard start even before running club begins. For many of these girls, this is one of the only extra-curricular activities that they are involved in. This also is the first time for most of them to run long distances. However, they do not let that stop them from staying after school to run after already being at school for 8 hours.
Despite difficult circumstances where most of the girls come from low-income households, they do not let that hinder them from giving their 100% in all that they do.
It is always encouraging to hear and see these girls give nothing but encouraging comments to each other as they run 1 mile, 2 miles, or 3 miles for the very first time.
My Project
For running club this year, I will be using a training program similar to a Couch to 5K program to build the girls stamina to run the full three miles and to help with pacing. Each runner will need a watch with a timer to help keep track of how much they need to run and walk as well as see their total time when training.
The sport watches are practical and simple resources that will help these girls become better runners.
With each girl having a watch, they will be able to keep track of their own progress. Having these resources will also show the girls that we believe in them and are here to support them 100%.
