My students need these wobble chairs, comfy floor seats, and wobble cushions to allow themselves to engage in classroom while meeting their internal needs.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My group of diverse learners are beginning their educational journey in a supportive, safe and nurturing environment. Our classroom is part a large New York City public school and my students are part of an initiative through the Department of Education to include children with special needs in the community school.
As individuals with autism, my students will need more resources and support than traditional kindergarten students.
It is my effort as their teacher to ensure that my students have the most seamless transition from early childhood education (CPSE services preschool) by providing these supports but also providing my students with the space to explore what they may need from a traditional school setting.
My Project
I am requesting three different types of flexible seating for my students: wobble stools, wobble cushions, and comfy floor seats that allow students to move in their chairs as well as floor pads for students to use while participating in instruction in the meeting area (on the floor).
A characteristic of individuals with autism is the engagement in self-stimulating behaviors, such as rocking back and forth.
Individuals with autism engage in these behaviors as a means of making their bodies feel comfortable and I want to ensure that my students feel that their move about is not an inappropriate behavior for the classroom. By meeting my students where they are at, I am going to be able to teach them to their fullest potential.
