Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I school in a small, farming town. One hundred percent of our students receive free lunch and breakfast. Forty-eight percent of our students are English learners. Although we are located in an older neighborhood, it is a tight-knit community with lots of family support.
"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -William Butler Yeats.
My students are inquisitive with a desire to explore and grow. They are eager to learn but have had limited opportunities for enrichment outside of school.
My Project
I am always on the lookout for easy to read books for our beginning readers. Last year I discovered a set of nonfiction books on a very low reading level. My students loved the colorful photos and the simple text. I later discovered that these were "Bullfrog" books, an imprint of Jump!
This project is for 12 Bullfrog books.
Bullfrog books are specifically developed for beginning readers to support Common Core Reading Standards for Informational Text.
These books will be a great addition to our school library. The Let's Take a Walk and Explore Nature series includes Seeds, Rocks, Oak Trees, Maple Trees, Leaves and Flowers. The Animal Classification series includes Amphibians, Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Fish and Insects.
This project also includes a magnetic shelf to prominently display the books as students enter the library.
