My Students

This is a small school district in rural Alaska, where supplies are hard to come by and are very expensive to ship. But the students are smart, kind, and eager to learn. All of the students here receive free breakfast and lunch due to economic disadvantages in our town. This area is about 64% Native Inupiaq population. Some of the kids here have never left the state or the town due to no international road system. We often have students that transfer in and out from the area to a smaller surrounding village.

My Project

Our reading center has bookshelves and a reading carpet. We would love to have areas to sit and read a book. Our classroom library is located near a window to get the natural sunlight while reading. Since we live in Alaska our area is often cold, which means the floor by our library is also cold. The sofa would allow for the students to be up off the floor and comfortable. The sofa with the book shelf underneath will allow for the students to store books they are enjoying. This sitting areas will allow a space for friends to read together. Also, with our storage bins we will be allowed to hold on to books we are enjoying until we finish them.
