Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at an Oakland public school that is predominately Latino (95%). It is a dual immersion school (Spanish/English) that focuses on teaching students to read, write, and perform arithmetic tasks in both languages. Most students receive free lunch and live near or at the poverty line. About 15% of the student are from Guatemala and speak Mam as a third language.
My resource classroom contains students who have various learning disabilities and require different modalities of learning to be successful.
Most of my students are two to three grade levels below and have difficultly understanding even the most basic of themes.
As an educator, I want to provide each of my students with the tools necessary for engagement in a regular classroom setting.
My Project
My project is designed to give the students in my teaching community access to interesting books during this uncertain time. The titles listed vary widely in subjects as well as reading proficiency.
I would like to entice all readers, especially those who may be reluctant to read by themselves.
Education in the past weeks has become virtual and many of my students' families still have limited access to online distance learning programs. For those families, I would like to start reading to students on YouTube or via the phone.
Any help you can give would be greatly welcomed and appreciated.
