This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are compassionate, creative, and loving. Each day they enter our schools with bright smiles, warm greetings, and big hugs. They have so much love to give. They love books and technology.
We do not have a Librarian at our school and many students do not have access to books at home, so the only books students have are in the classroom.
Our classroom libraries are composed of books from the publishing company that don't always reflect out culture and heritage.
Reading is essential for my students. Each day students inquire when will they receive books that they can relate to. There is a buzz about books and an excitement for reading in our school.
My Project
The books chosen will help students relate to people who look like them, share similar experiences, and open their world up to endless possibilities.
Students will select these books to read for enjoyment and to help increase Literacy in first and second Grade during their Drop Everything and Read Time.
This is a 45-minute block of time used specifically to help students develop a passion for reading and help with the learning loss experienced during the pandemic.
Additionally, these books will help students read large passages when they are assessed and help fulfill the requirements needed to be promoted to the next grade level.
