I teach in a school where 69% of the students receive free and reduced lunches. This year 8 out of my 24 students are E.S.L. with limited English. My parents are very poor and many do not speak English. I would like to purchase Time Magazine for Kids for each of my students. These papers would provide real-life stories written with easy vocabulary words. I would use these papers each week to enhance my literacy objectives and would also use them for social studies lessons. Budget cuts have made it impossible for me to purchase these papers and my parents are unable to supply their child with this need. My students are not privileged to have magazines in their home so this makes an exciting adventure for them in the classroom. Subjects come alive for them when they see the bright pictures and easy vocabulary words that they are beginning to read. The special part of this paper is that after they read it in the classroom they get to take their own magazine home to share with their parents. This is an educational tool that we can use the entire year. I would appreciate so much if you would consider this proposal because it would mean a great deal to 25 students. Thank you.
