I teach Second Grade Math and Reading in a dual language school. As a dual language school, we teach in both English and Spanish. I am responsible for leading the Math and Language Arts instruction entirely in Spanish!
Many of the students that I serve are reading lovers and enthusiastic, curious learners.
They like to learn new things so they can feel like they are useful and creative.
Sometimes, the students need a lot of help with their work. But, as a Math teacher one of the themes of our classroom is that it is okay to make mistakes because mistakes help us to become better learners. I enjoy coming to work because it is challenging but rewarding to see how much my kids can grow.
My Project
The books that I've chosen in this project are leveled books that will allow my students to practice their fluency and comprehension skills based on their reading needs.
One of my aspirations this year is providing the most motivating and enriched reading experiences to my students in order for them to value the importance of being bilingual in a diverse community.
My kids will be able to choose books that not only are interesting for them but will also help them reach their independent reading goals while practicing and learning a second language.
A great amount of my second graders this year are non Spanish Native Language Speakers therefore, Spanish is quite a challenge for them. At this moment our classroom library consists only of three leveled book bins which is not enough to provide a differentiated opportunity to all reading levels present in my class.
