Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fifth grade teacher of all subjects in Brooklyn, New York. The school in which I teach is a Title 1 school in a low-socio economic area. In my school we are severely lacking content area materials for science and social studies. We do not use any textbooks and therefore our lessons must be planned from trade books or articles from magazines. In our classroom community there are 28 fifth graders who love learning new concepts in science. When given the opportunity to choose books to read independently from the library, most students choose non-fiction literature. Part of the fifth grade science curriculum is earth science. What I would like to do is a content based study on earth and the children would be required to choose a topic of research that they would like to become "EXPERTS" on. The problem is we do not have many books in our classroom or throughout the fifth grade. The teachers just got together and made a small packet of features of non-fiction such as a glossary, index, table of contents, and other things that we would like the students to understand as well as use in their non-fiction published books. Unfortunately this is not good enough! The students need to hold a book of their own and read it to make this experience a true learning experience. I would like for the children to be able to take a book home and show their parents what they are learning in school. What we need are a set of books that can be shared by the students. Each student will research a topic of his or her choice and the final project will be an "ALL ABOUT" book that will be placed inside of their portfolio that will be passed on to their middle school. We hope that you will take our proposal into consideration!!
