I teach dance to students in grades K-5. We are in our first year as an arts magnet school and we serve an extremely high-need community.
My students have become eager to learn more about dance and they love stories that relate to dance. The boys I teach love to hear about boys who were dancers. Inspiring stories about dance keep the boys eager to move and helps them become less inhibited about their gender in dance.
The problem I am facing in acquiring dance books is that most of their copyright dates are over ten years. My district will not buy books for our library that are not current. There are so many wonderful books that relate to dance that would greatly benefit my classroom that are considered out-dated. It is a shame that a copyright date prevents students from having the opportunity to read about something they love.
I see these resources giving my students enthusiasm about dance and a greater eagerness to get involved. I see their participation and interest soaring through reading and listening to these books.
You will make it possible for my students to become more avid readers and enthusiastic readers by giving them something that they will enjoy. It will also help them learn something new about dance, give them confidence as dancers, and make them excited about learning.
