This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students live in a high poverty area on the south side of Peoria, Illinois. Ninety percent of my students live in single-parent homes, receive free breakfast and lunch, struggle to dress appropriately for school and lack transportation to get around. I will have approximately 400 energetic, loving and creative artist come to my art class, this year. I have the privilege to teach art to students in grades K-4.
Every student that walks in my door, should receive countless opportunities to make amazing art!
The students that I teach are energetic, creative and very deserving of the appropriate art supplies to complete their projects. My students absolutely love to create with oil pastels, paint and other mediums. Many of them have never used some of these materials before, and it's truly a joy to watch.
My students are eager to learn new art techniques and learn about famous artists. Art is so important for our students, because is boosts creativity and enhances critical thinking. Our kids are serious about their art projects and tell me how excited they are to come to class. They learn from each other as we tackle new project each week.
My Project
"Let's Read About Art", will grow our art room library significantly. I will be able access countless book titles related to art and artists, to tie into weekly lessons. I also feel that having these types of books on hand as a resource will create countless opportunities for our schools young budding artists. Reading literacy levels will be positively impacted, by broadening the scope of titles that are available to primary art students. Students will be given the opportunity to use these books as secondary resources for other projects they are working on at school.
To instill a love for reading, it is imperative that students have access to grade-level appropriate books that represent a variety of artistic subjects.
With creative and specific literature, my students will develop an inclusive and thoughtful worldview of the arts while reading about various artists and art making techniques.
