Help me give my students a better variety of books. Regular novels and graphic novels are going to allow the students a better chance at selecting a book that they like and becoming lifelong readers.
Each of my students, ages 13 to 15, have been challenged to read as my books as they can by the end of the school year. I have students reading below, on, and above grade level. As we move through the year, I like to allow my students to read books that capture their interest.
The students are encouraged to go beyond their comfort zone to experience different types of books than what they have read in the past.
If a student is reading a book that they don't enjoy, he/she can abandon that book and try it again later. By allowing them to make this choice, they know that the reading that they are doing is for them not just because they were told to read.
My Project
My students read for twenty to thirty minutes daily. The books that we are requesting will add more variety and choice for the students. The students and I have included several graphic novels as this is one area that the classroom library is lacking. During our reading time, students are encouraged to select a book of their interest. If they don't like the book that they have started, they can find a new one. The students will have more voice and choice when it comes to selecting their books if we can add more variety to the selection.
My hope is to allow my students at all levels to find the love of reading so that they will become lifelong readers.
In order to succeed with my hope, I need to be able to provide a diverse selection of books and authors that can provide the students a stronger desire to read. A contribution to our library will allow my current and future students to expand their abilities and interest in reading.
