Help me give my students the ability to learn proper knife skills, using real commercial grade Dexter knives, that they can take into their home lives, or the real world professional kitchen.
I am a culinary instructor in South Carolina and we have been really ramping up our career and technology education classes. The district has put in all new, professional kitchens in each of the high schools, and has really provided an opportunity for students to learn safety and sanitation, nutrition, and cooking techniques that they will be able to use throughout their lives.
Being able to cook a nutritious meal for themselves is a necessary life skill that every student should know how to do.
Some of these students have a goal of becoming the next great cooks or chefs, some are just interested in learning a few culinary techniques to prepare food for their families, and some are really just in the class because they want to eat.
I am a firm believer that anyone can cook as long as they're willing to commit a few simple techniques to memory that they can apply to many different types of food. We strive to teach the students how to prepare food in a sustainable, healthy way that is easy enough to do at home!
My Project
We currently do not have any proper knives for the students to learn culinary with. It gets very discouraging for them when they can not make the correct knife cuts, even though it's not all their fault. Some of these knife cuts are difficult to master and will take some time, but dull knives with loose handles are a bad combination for the safety of the students.
We could use a lot to make our kitchens better for training students, but a class set of Dexter chef's knives is a great start to getting them learning the basics.
These students are dedicated and eager to learn how to cook, I am simply desperate to give them the tools they need to properly learn.
