Let's Pretend!

My students need a variety of dramatic play items to practice manipulating fasteners & engage in pretend play schemes.

My Students

Many of our students are diagnosed with developmental delays in areas like self-help/adaptive skills & will benefit from any opportunity to practice fine motor skills like dressing and fastening a variety of fasteners.

These same students also have difficulty with interacting with their peers.

However, when given the opportunity to pretend to cook or dress up like someone else in the dramatic play area, all of a sudden the students are provided with the perfect play scenario to enact! The students in our class range from ages 3-5. The students are in a blended developmental preschool which includes both typically developing students and students with disabilities. We are located in a diverse neighborhood with about 90% of our students qualifying for the free and reduced lunch program. Opportunities to encourage learning a variety of play ideas, interactions amongst peers, and increasing their independence occur during our choice time which lasts between 30-45 minutes daily. This time is valuable for instilling creativity and social skills!

My Project

Our current play sink was purchased 12 years ago and recently lost its spout! Some of our students have adjusted to this change but others don't play appropriately with the sink because it just doesn't look like one anymore! We also need a new coat/clothing rack because, like the sink, this prop has also been damaged and is no longer safe to keep in our classroom. It is important for our students to be able to identify and become familiar with a variety of fruit (to encourage healthy eating) & to practice their counting (to improve math skills) and "cutting" skills (improves fine motor skills) and the cans of fruit & cutting fruit in our cart will help our students practice these skills in a fun setting. We also encourage playing turn taking board games to develop social skills and with the Charades game they are also able to practice imitating peers, guessing, turn taking, and moving game pieces at appropriate times.

Your donation will give ALL of our students the opportunity to practice a variety of skills during their favorite time of the day (besides snack time of course!): free play time!

Your donation will foster their creativity and create opportunities for increasing their independence in self-help, social, and cognitive skill areas. All while they are having fun pretending to do and be anything that they want to be!
