Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have come from around the world to our school in Nashua, New Hampshire. At our school, over 75% of our students get free and reduced-price lunch, and over 33% are the English Language Learners that I work with each day.
My students are amazingly bright, funny, intelligent, and eager.
They have so much potential. Some have attended school before, others have never attended any sort of school, while still others have had only intermittent access to an education. Each and every student is brave and bold, facing a new place and experience. They are learning a new language along with all the content required of them. They are amazing!
Not only do I work with my students, but it is so important to communicate and collaborate with their families as well. For many of my students, this is also the first experience their families have had with the educational system here in the USA. We work hard to make sure families are welcome in our school, their voices are heard, and we are available to answer all of their questions.
My Project
The students I see this year are not only struggling with academics, but also with how to converse with each other, play together, and solve disputes. In order to meet all of these needs, I am finding it necessary to have a larger variety of resources to keep the students interested and on task, as well as give them more chances to practice what I'm teaching. My English Learners will be able to use the LEGOs, modeling clay, and play people to practice having conversations in a non-threatening way, so they are ready to have those difficult conversations with each other when they need to. I'm excited for my students to have a fun way to practice talking about how they feel, so they can better express their own emotions as well as understand how other students are feeling.
I am finding that I need to more creative and resourceful this year than ever before!
I need many resources in order for my students stay engaged and to have success at school. It starts with something as simple as a whiteboard (as I currently don't have one) and sentence strips, but also includes the pocket chart and magnetic shelves to keep myself and my students organized so we can keep the learning momentum. I plan to use the magnetic tape and felt to make objects that students can manipulate, such as letters, vocabulary, or sequencing scenes. These will provide my students the opportunity to show what they know in a variety of ways. Thank you for your support in giving my students the tools they need to make growth, academically as well as social-emotionally.
