Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has eight classes of students with special needs, multiple disabilities and students with Autism. Our school just opened in the upper-manhattan/bronx area and is lacking in the way of many basic supplies.
Our students are incredible young men and women who work every day to overcome challenges and access curriculum and the world in a variety of ways.
As teachers, we need to adapt many of the materials that we use to meet students' academic and cognitive levels. We work to teach our students how to be as independent as possible with exposure and training in living, social, and vocational skills.
My Project
My students with autism need blocks, block people, transportation vehicles and to provide them with opportunities to learn play skills, make social connections with their peers and dramatic play. The benefits of block play are endless.
My class is a class called ASD self-contained class in a specialized district for students with special needs.
ASD stands for Autism Spectrum Disorder and Nest because the classroom is nested within a NYC public school. Autistic students have many issues that make them unique and make school and social relationships challenging for them. As their teacher, I want to provide them with ways to encourage their socialization skills with their peers. Since socializing is extremely hard for them, I try and look for unique ways for them to socialize. One way to do this is through play. I want to create an area in my classroom where the kids can initiate play with their peers. This is why I would like to create a block center (wooden blocks, play carpet, play people, cars, block shelf) where they can engage in play with their typical peers.
The reason why this center is innovative and student centered is because playing and sharing with their typical peers is so hard for Autistic children.
It sounds so simple! Play blocks with your peers, however, for 4 and 5 year old Autistic students this may be the hardest thing they do that day. Letters, reading and numbers are easy for them. Sharing and playing alongside their peers-not so easy. I would love to have my students invite other Kindergarten students to come and play in our block center
