I am a multimedia specialist running our school library. I also coach our robotics club. I would like to start a LEGO Club as part of a maker space. It would encourage our younger students to develop their creativity and design skills. A LEGO Club would also align with our school's STEM focus.
Our school is a K-6 elementary school in the city of Aiea, Hawaii.
We have about 460 students, with approximately 55 percent of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches. About 10 percent of our students are English Language Learners. Our largest ethnic group is Filipino, at 34 percent, followed by Native Hawaiian at 18 percent.
My Project
I would use these materials to create a LEGO center in the library. Students in the club could come at morning recess to play with the LEGO bricks and flex their creative muscles. The students could read the LEGO idea books and be inspired to try new builds.
Donations to this project would make a tremendous difference in the lives of our students.
There are few clubs for younger students to join, and our K-3 teachers have been requesting additional activities for them to participate in. Many of our students' families cannot afford to purchase LEGO pieces for their children to use at home. Having LEGO available in school would provide our students with a fun activity that would be extremely popular.
