Let's Play in K: The Harbinger of Life-Long Learners
My students need art supplies and learning activities, such as construction paper, Bristle Builders, and Build-A-Number Houses, to really make learning come alive!
"What are we making today?" is often exclaimed as my lively kindergarten students burst into our classroom each morning. We are a Title I school with a growing English Language Learner population. Our classroom is lucky enough to have students from Haiti, Cuba, Uzbek, and Russia. Despite the economic challenges my students face at home, they bring an abundance of joy and energy through our door daily.
The JOY of learning RADIATES from these young scholars!
As their teacher, I am tasked with providing them a nurturing, child-centered oasis at school to bring them happiness, meaningful play-based learning opportunities.
Despite the challenge of learning English and the aftermath of a devastating storm, my students are always eager to explore, invent and prove that they are natural-born problem solvers. They thirst for experiences that make them even more engaged. They are loving of each other and are always helping each other strive for excellence. I am blessed with the opportunity to provide this class with creative, active, engaging and quality learning experiences that will help each of them blossom into tomorrow's leaders.
My Project
Having learning games really makes learning to read come alive! Young readers and mathematicians need to get their hands on what they are learning. The Lock and Key numbers will not only help my students learn numbers and number words, but they will be able to develop fine motor skills as well. The Bristle Blocks will make for an engaging STEM activity that my students will be able to show their inner author and write about what they have constructed. The number building blocks will be make learning numbers and develop addition skills while using their hands.
"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." This quote from Ben Franklin speaks volumes, especially in the Kindergarten classroom.
My students will enjoy expanding their artistic talents with the wide array of colors of construction paper as they take their learning to the next level.
